Quotable Beginnings

I begin my first venture into blogging to express my thoughts on my Motherland, the Philippines. The times are perilous and as uncertain as it was centuries ago when we were under colonial rule. Our so-called 107th Independence Day has just been celebrated three days ago, and today, Filipinos do not feel as confident as someone who has been independent for more than a century.

Let me begin my first post with choice quotes which I think might inspire my downtrodden fellowmen battered by cynicism and never-ending intrigues.

  • Patriotism is not short, frenzied outbursts of emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime. -- Adlai Stevenson

  • Patriotism is as fierce as a fever, pitiless as the grave, blind as a stone, and irrational as a headless hen. -- Ambrose Bierce

  • The law is reason free from passion. -- Aristotle

  • The young are permanently in a state resembling intoxication. -- Aristotle

  • Happiness comes of the capacity to feel deeply, to enjoy simply, to think freely, to risk life, to be needed. -- Storm Jameson

  • Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn't it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up. You build up all these defenses, you build up a whole suit of armor, so that nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life...You give them a piece of you. They didn't ask for it. They did something dumb one day, like kiss you or smile at you, and then your life isn't your own anymore. Love takes hostages. It gets inside you. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, so simple a phrase like 'maybe we should be just friends' turns into a glass splinter working its way into your heart. It hurts. Not just in the imagination. Not just in the mind. It's a soul-hurt, a real gets-inside-you-and-rips-you-apart pain. I hate love. -- Neil Gaiman

  • A man's character may be learned from the adjectives which he habitually uses in conversation. -- Mark Twain

  • The one who loves you will make you weep -- Argentine Proverb

  • Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated. -- Confucius

  • When money speaks, the truth is silent. -- Russian Proverb

  • Jealousy is the tribute mediocrity pays to genius. -- Fulton Sheen

  • The world is a dangerous place. Not because of the people who are evil; but because of the people who don't do anything about it. -- Albert Einstein
